St. Stephen

Lutheran Church

St. Stephen Lutheran Church was born in May of 1979 from the merger of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. Pastor William E. Herbst began his ministry as the first pastor of St. Stephen in November of that year, and Pastor Paul A. Herpich was called as assistant pastor to begin his ministry in June of 1980.

In 1988, St. Stephen celebrated the 150th anniversary of the founding its first predecessor congregation, St. John's and the start of Lutheranism in Syracuse.

In January 2001, Pastor John Van Haneghan began his ministry at St. Stephen. Under his leadership, we look forward to continuing to be a strong presence on the northside of the city of Syracuse.
