Evangelical Lutheran Church
of the
Resurrection
In the 1950's, Mount Tabor Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer began working toward merger. In 1956, these two congregations merged to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. Upon this merger, the Mount Tabor congregation moved into the building located at 873 Dewitt Street, the present site of St. Stephen Lutheran Church.
The 1960's and 1970's were marked by the ministry of two Lutheran Churches on the northside of Syracuse. Then, in 1975, Resurrection and St. John's entered into a formal covenant for joint use of the facilities on Dewitt Street. The covenant stipulated that the two congregations would operate as two separate corporate entities. Each would have the right two use the building and the grounds, and both would share equally in the cost of maintenance.
1976 saw St. John's worshipping on Dewitt Street, and in the following year, joint worship services were introduced. The final merger was completed in May of 1979 with the formulation of St. Stephen Lutheran Church.
