St. John's

Evangelical

Lutheran Church

In 1965, a merger was completed by the two congregations at Butternut Street and Prospect Avenue when Zion Lutheran Church merged with St. John's and St. Peter's Lutheran Church. St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, which had suffered spirits in the 1840's and 1860's, was, once again, by the grace of God, reunited.

The 1960's and 1970's were marked by the ministry of two Lutheran Churches on the northside of Syracuse. Then, in 1975, Resurrection and St. John's entered into a formal covenant for joint use of the facilities on Dewitt Street. The covenant stipulated that the two congregations would operate as two separate corporate entities. Each would have the right two use the building and the grounds, and both would share equally in the cost of maintenance.

1976 saw St. John's worshipping on Dewitt Street, and in the following year, joint worship services were introduced. The final merger was completed in May of 1979 with the formulation of St. Stephen Lutheran Church.
